Construction of the CEOG hydrogen power project in French Guiana was launched in September 2021. Image courtesy of Meridiam. The Centrale Electrique de l’Ouest Guyanais (CEOG) project under construction in French Guiana will be the world’s biggest hydrogen-based renewable energy storage facility, upon completion.
The system arrived at the John Fernandes Wharf in Georgetown in 22 containers and will serve as the facility’s emergency support in the event of turbine failure. It comprises battery racks, six inverters, auxiliary transformers, and a fully integrated power distribution center (PDC) shelter.
The arrival of the BESS follows the earlier delivery of two gas turbines, each capable of generating 45 megawatts of electricity. Together, these components are expected to enhance the reliability of Guyana’s national grid, reduce carbon emissions, and support the delivery of more affordable electricity.
It will be connected to French Guiana’s electricity grid through EDF’s substation in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni. The facility will provide reliable and clean electricity to power up to 10,000 French Guiana households. It will meet half of the energy demand in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni and the Mana commune of French Guiana.
The global commercial and industrial solar energy storage battery market is experiencing unprecedented growth, with demand increasing by over 400% in the past three years.
