Today, commercially operational GFM inverters primarily utilize battery energy storage sys-tem (BESS)-based inverters. However, research is under-way to integrate GFM inverters with non-BESS resources, like photovoltaic panels, type 3 and 4 wind turbines, high-voltage dc (HVdc) converters, and even devices like static synchronous compensators.
