[...] Cellular base stations (BSs) are equipped with backup batteries to obtain the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and maintain the power supply reliability. While maintaining the reliability, the backup batteries of 5G BSs have some spare capacity over time due to the traffic-sensitive characteristic of 5G BS electricity load.
This is when the PSU is no longer powering the PA, which is the main power draw, but still needs to power other electronics. The current target for low-load efficiency is about 30 W. Some OEMs would like to see that drop to nearly 10 W.
In this article, the schedulable capacity of the battery at each time is determined according to the dynamic communication flow, and the scheduling strategy of the standby power considering the dynamic change of communication flow is proposed. In addition, the model of a base station standby battery responding grid scheduling is established.

In 4G, radios are always on, even when traffic levels don’t warrant it, such as transmitting reference signals to detect users in the middle of the night.
In practice, the battery groups (either traditional lead-acid batteries or emerging lithium ones) are deployed as the backup power supply of BSs. In our scenario, one battery group could be shared by multiple BSs nearby to exploit the statistical multiplexing gain, and the multiple BSs sharing the same battery group form a virtual cell (VC).
