Residents of Mirebalais shut down Haiti’s Péligre hydroelectric plant to protest gang control, triggering blackouts amid a growing fuel crisis. The Péligre hydroelectric dam, built on the vast Artibonite River, is located near Mirebalais in the Centre Department and has long served as the country’s main source of electricity.

The capital's poorest residents cannot afford either alternative. With a capacity of 54 megawatts (MW), Peligre provides nearly all of EDH's 60 MW of hydroelectric power, Haiti's largest source of electricity after fossil fuels. Just 49% of people in the Caribbean nation have access to the electricity grid, according to the latest World Bank data.
After completion in the 1970s Péligre HPP contributed to Haiti’s energy supply with an annual production of 320 GWh, stemming from an average power of 47 MW during the rainy period (May to November) and 22 MW during the dry period (December to April).
In this context, and as part of its strategy to support Haiti’s electricity sector, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) financed technical studies conducted by an international consultant to set out a detailed rehabilitation plan and prepare tender documents on the basis of the conclusions of the 2008 sedimentation study.
As Haiti’s energy crisis deepens, fuel shortages threaten to make things worse. On May 13, the Association of Petroleum and Energy Professionals (APPE) warned in a letter to Prime Minister Fils-Aimé of an imminent breakdown in the fuel supply chain.
The global commercial and industrial solar energy storage battery market is experiencing unprecedented growth, with demand increasing by over 400% in the past three years. Large-scale battery storage solutions now account for approximately 45% of all new commercial solar installations worldwide. North America leads with 42% market share, driven by corporate sustainability goals and federal investment tax credits that reduce total system costs by 30-35%. Europe follows with 35% market share, where standardized industrial storage designs have cut installation timelines by 60% compared to custom solutions. Asia-Pacific represents the fastest-growing region at 50% CAGR, with manufacturing innovations reducing system prices by 20% annually. Emerging markets are adopting commercial storage for peak shaving and energy cost reduction, with typical payback periods of 3-6 years. Modern industrial installations now feature integrated systems with 50kWh to multi-megawatt capacity at costs below $500/kWh for complete energy solutions.
Technological advancements are dramatically improving solar energy storage battery performance while reducing costs for commercial applications. Next-generation battery management systems maintain optimal performance with 50% less energy loss, extending battery lifespan to 20+ years. Standardized plug-and-play designs have reduced installation costs from $1,000/kW to $550/kW since 2022.
