Mobile phones and other mobile devices require a network of base stations in order to function. The base station antennas transmit and receive RF (radio frequency) signals, or radio waves, to and from mobile phones near the base station. Without these radio waves, mobile communications would not be possible.
Mobile base stations that have service areas overlap the area of parks are park-related base stations, and these base stations could be classified into three groups, including 1. Base stations with the service area covering the location of park gates, 2. Base stations located within the boundary of park, and 3.
In total, we identified 46 parks with mobile base stations within park boundary (Table 2). Among these parks, 11 (23.91%) parks are smaller than 5 ha, 13 (28.26%) parks are with the area of 5 to 10 ha, 11 (23.91%) parks are with the area of 10 to 50 ha, and another 11 (23.91%) parks are larger than 50 ha.
In total, 9930 mobile base stations were involved in the present study, 5808 (58.5%) base stations have a service radius less than 400 m; 3071 (30.9%) base stations have a service radius less than 1.0 km. The average service radius of all mobile base stations is 912.33 m, which could be regarded as the estimated accuracy of the findings.
It is worth noting that the reliability of this approach depends on many factors, such as the area of mobile base station service area (Ratti et al., 2006), and the land use around the park.
The base station antennas are usually placed on rooftops, in masts or on building walls. Antennas are sometimes also installed in shopping malls, airports, offices, and other places with many mobile phone users. Indoor antennas are usually placed on walls or on ceilings. Each base station can only serve a limited number of mobile devices at a time.
