From pv magazine France The French government has published Decree No. 2024-1023, mandating solar installations on parking lots larger than 1,500 sqm. The provisions define how to calculate the surface areas subject to the rule. They outline exemption criteria and set fines for non-compliance.
Several measures specifically make it easier to deploy solar thermal and photovoltaic near roads, on the coastline. The bill makes it mandatory to install photovoltaic shades in outdoor car parks of more than 2,500 square meters—which in aggregate represent between 90–150 million square meters in France.
A solar power system can be used to supply all your energy needs, although in France it’s usually combined with an electric or gas heating system, as solar power cannot usually be relied upon year-round for heating and hot water.
This would almost double the installed solar capacity of France, which was 13.2GW as of 2021. Starting 1 July 2023, car parks with at least 80 places and up to 400 will have five years to comply with the new measure, while bigger car parks will be required to implement the changes in three years.
The French Government announced its ambition to achieve by 2050 a tenfold expansion in solar energy output to exceed 100GW and to roll out fifty new offshore windfarms to reach 40GW. To do so, the bill includes provisions to cut red tape and speed-up permitting procedures in specific ‘acceleration zones’.
Long-Term Strategy: France's PV policies are guided by the National Low Carbon Strategy (SNBC), targeting carbon neutrality by 2050, and the Multi-Year Energy Programme (PPE), outlining 10-year energy objectives.
The global commercial and industrial solar energy storage battery market is experiencing unprecedented growth, with demand increasing by over 400% in the past three years.
