Yet, the solar photovoltaic potential remains underutilized. There are certain roadblocks in the progress of solar PV deployment in ASEAN. This paper aims to investigate the solar PV policies in the ASEAN region over the past decade. Also, an attempt was made to provide policy recommendations.
South East Asian countries are blessed with abundant solar energy potential. Yet, the solar photovoltaic potential remains underutilized. There are certain roadblocks in the progress of solar PV deployment in ASEAN. This paper aims to investigate the solar PV policies in the ASEAN region over the past decade.
In Malaysia, the introduction of the Net Energy Metering and tax allowances serve as catalysts for solar PV installation, while government-led tariff adjustments further propel the adoption of solar energy. These concerted efforts show how solar energy is set to be a mainstay in ASEAN’s energy mix for decades to come.
We have discussed the current and potential solar energy installations and outputs of each country in the ASEAN region. The deployment of hybrid PV systems, such as floating PV installations, to reduce reliance on fossil fuels was discussed. The article further explored the critical maintenance protocols and predictive measures.
Presently, ASEAN boasts 28 GW of large utility-scale solar and wind power, contributing 9 percent to the region’s total electricity capacity.
