(Xinhua/Zhang Yuwei) BEIJING, April 18 (Xinhua) -- The number of 5G base stations in China has topped over 4.39 million by the end of March, with the user penetration rate reaching 75.9 percent, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said on Friday.
The move comes as the country charted its vision for industrial growth during a two-day work conference of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. With 4.19 million 5G base stations already in operation, the industry regulator said that "promoting 5G revolution and 6G innovation will be one of the priorities" next year.
The number of 5G mobile subscribers hit 966 million in China. The country has seen its 5G network and commercialization develop rapidly in recent years. Its 5G network now covers every city and town, as well as more than 90 percent of villages. China's 5G standard essential patent declarations account for 42 percent of the global total.
According to MIIT data, 5G technologies have been integrated into 71 major economic categories in China. Zhao Zhiguo, the ministry's chief engineer, said the ministry will continue to promote the digital transformation of industries and carry out the AI Plus initiative to speed up new industrialization empowered by digital technologies.
Chinese main operators are China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom. In addition to its expected expansion in the 5G field, China noted that it is also set to begin trials for 10-gigabit optical networks and enhance computing power infrastructure, reflecting the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
Alongside the 5G push, China will also start trials for 10-gigabit optical networks and optimize computing power centers amid an artificial intelligence (AI) boom brought on by ChatGPT.
