The combined power generation from wind and solar energy amounted to 1.83 trillion kilowatt-hours in 2024, a 27 percent increase from 2023. The figure is roughly equivalent to the electricity consumption of the tertiary industry in 2024, and surpasses the residential electricity consumption, which stood at 1.49 trillion kilowatt-hours.
In addition, considering the power generation structure in China in recent years, the water saving potential under the maximum photovoltaic scenario in China during the year 2015–2017 could reach 3.75%, 4.04%, and 4.27% of China's national water supply.
Meanwhile, China's renewable energy generation also reached 3.46 trillion kilowatt-hours in 2024, with a year-on-year rise of 19 percent, accounting for about 35 percent of the total electricity generated. The combined power generation from wind and solar energy amounted to 1.83 trillion kilowatt-hours in 2024, a 27 percent increase from 2023.
In this study, some parameter settings are specific to the Chinese situation. However, our conclusions have policy implications for the large-scale consumption of PV power generation in China and other countries. In 2014, China's PV cumulative installed capacity reached 28.05 GW. Currently, supportive policies in China focus on the national level.
This creates the chance for large-scale PV to help break the bottleneck of the water constraints for power sector in China. While solar PV is widely regarded as a water-saving technology, it comes with embodied water associated with the manufacture of renewable energy equipment .
Water saving potential under the maximum large-scale PV power generation scenario in China during the year 2015–2017 is calculated to be 2.29 × 10 10 m 3, 2.44 × 10 10 m 3, and 2.58 × 10 10 m 3, respectively. These saving potentials can reach 3.75%, 4.04%, and 4.27% of China's national water supply.

Standardized plug-and-play designs have reduced installation costs from $1,000/kW to $550/kW since 2022. Smart integration features now allow industrial systems to operate as virtual power plants, increasing business savings by 40% through time-of-use optimization and grid services. Safety innovations including multi-stage protection and thermal management systems have reduced insurance premiums by 30% for commercial storage installations. New modular designs enable capacity expansion through simple battery additions at just $450/kWh for incremental storage. These innovations have improved ROI significantly, with commercial projects typically achieving payback in 4-7 years depending on local electricity rates and incentive programs. Recent pricing trends show standard industrial systems (50-100kWh) starting at $25,000 and premium systems (200-500kWh) from $100,000, with flexible financing options available for businesses.
