Image credit: CnEVPost) CATL (SHE: 300750) has begun construction on a $6 billion battery manufacturing plant in Indonesia, according to a report by Bloomberg yesterday. The project is a joint venture between CATL, Indonesia's state-owned battery company Indonesia Battery Corp, and PT Aneka Tambang, located in Karawang regency, West Java province.
The battery plant, located in Karawang, West Java, represents a $5.9 billion investment. Key stakeholders include Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), mining giant Aneka Tambang, CATL, Brunp Recycling (a CATL subsidiary), and Chinese battery materials producer Lygend Resources. The facility is designed with capacity of up to 15 gigawatts (GW).
The production would be supplied to both domestic and foreign markets. A $6 billion power battery project agreed upon in 2022 by Indonesian enterprises, including state miner PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, opens new tab, and a CATL consortium includes the partnership between Indonesia Battery Corp and the Chinese behemoth Contemporary Amperex Technology Co.
Jakarta, June 29 – Indonesia’s Battery Corporation and China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. (CATL) plan to bring a joint lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant into operation by the end of 2026, according to Dwi Anggia, spokeswoman for the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
The government in Jakarta is developing these raw material deposits in conjunction with adjacent inland industrial processes, such as nickel processing, cathode materials, battery production and vehicle plants. In 2024, Hyundai and LGES commissioned a battery cell factory in Indonesia. Hyundai opened a vehicle plant in Indonesia in 2022.
