The fundamental parameters of the base stations are listed in Table 1. The energy storage battery for each base station has a rated capacity of 18 kWh, a maximum charge/discharge power of 3 kW, a SOC range from 10% to 90%, and an efficiency of 0.85.
In this paper, a distributed collaborative optimization approach is proposed for power distribution and communication networks with 5G base stations. Firstly, the model of 5G base stations considering communication load demand migration and energy storage dynamic backup is established.
Figure 1 illustrates the equipment composition of a typical 5G communication base station, which mainly consists of 2 aspects: a communication unit and a power supply unit.
Analogous to traditional distribution networks, the operation of distribution systems incorporating 5G communication base stations must adhere to active and reactive power flow constraints.
Compared with the basic scenario, the amount of electricity sold by DSO to the upper grid during the peak output of PV is reduced, which shows that the coordination of the distribution network and communication network alleviates the problem of power reverse caused by a high proportion of distributed PV. Afterward, a collaborative optimal operation model of power distribution and communication networks is designed to fully explore the operation flexibility of 5G base stations, and then an improved distributed algorithm based on the ADMM is developed to achieve the collaborative optimization equilibrium.

Standardized plug-and-play designs have reduced installation costs from $1,000/kW to $550/kW since 2022. Smart integration features now allow industrial systems to operate as virtual power plants, increasing business savings by 40% through time-of-use optimization and grid services. Safety innovations including multi-stage protection and thermal management systems have reduced insurance premiums by 30% for commercial storage installations. New modular designs enable capacity expansion through simple battery additions at just $450/kWh for incremental storage. These innovations have improved ROI significantly, with commercial projects typically achieving payback in 4-7 years depending on local electricity rates and incentive programs. Recent pricing trends show standard industrial systems (50-100kWh) starting at $25,000 and premium systems (200-500kWh) from $100,000, with flexible financing options available for businesses.
